As a dedicated idealist Timm Sonnenschein’s photographic work is informed by a search for social and political justice. Timm seeks to empathise with those he photographs while simultaneously exposing and opposing the forces he sees as undermining an open and engaged contemporary society.

He has been using photography as a tool to create insightful and critical observations of social awareness and change. His work attempts to open a dialogue, which encourages empathetic insights that aim at strengthening dignity and respect within an often divided society.

Timm Sonnenschein is a German-born UK based documentary photographer. He is the designer and joined editor of Born of Fire and the Void Buddhist zine. As a lecturer within Birmingham City University’s School of Visual Communication he is currently focusing on the delivery of their Wuhan based Birmingham Institute of Fashion and Creative Art (BIFCA) partner course.

He is a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order and was given the name Alokavira (Sanskrit ‘Hero of Light’) during his ordination in 2004.

As a researcher Timm is exploring what position and shape empathy takes and how it is experienced within social and political documentary photography.

Timm is a member of the National Union of Journalists and the photo agency Report Digital.
